In the tradition of Borat and the Marx Brothers, South Australian comic Steve Sheehan and acclaimed actor Emma Beech star as Stevl Shefn and His Translator Fatima in Dating the World at Comedy on the Rox on Wednesday February 8

A very silly lecture about trying to relate, Dating the World was:

Winner Best Comedy Adelaide Fringe 2010

Nominee Golden Gibbo Award Melbourne Comedy Festival 2010

Winner IAF Award for Innovation Adelaide Critics Circle 2010

Best Show (comedy) Adelaide Theatre Guide Awards 2011

A man speaking gibberish translated by a woman in a burqa tells a fantastical tale about his relationships, including one with a vacuum cleaner who joins them onstage.

A unique character comedy introducing two new clowns. One all colour and movement and desperate to be known, a downtrodden everyman in the tradition of Borat and the Marx brothers; the other a colourless translator, unknown but for her expressive eyes and intelligent assured English translation. At once confronting, innocent, deadpan, manic and humane we are ultimately uplifted by Stevl Shefn and his translator Fatima. As one shaggy-dog story follows another Stevl’s survival is commendable but who is Fatima and what’s her story?

Top US comic Michael Kosta, Kiwi Dan Brader and West Australia’s Brett Blake for a very impressive supporting line-up.

Plus Heat 2 of Quest for the Best, Australia’s richest open mic competition. The line-up is:

Peter Gleeson

Fiona Della Ca and Kellie Higgins

Boris Rudic

Ryan Clark

Matt Wood

CJ Delling

Boutros Chedid

Tickets are $17 ($15 conc) and afre availablethrough Moshtix or at the door.

On their way to Melbourne, they’ll be doing a regional tour and a Sydney preview show at the Roxbury on Saturday, February 11, at 8pm.
The line-up has a familiar flavour to last year with festival veteran Kale Bogdanovs, Rafe Morris and Greg Kimball returning; with gifted festival newcomers Jez Margosis and Marie Helou joining the ride in 2012. There will be a host of local special guest performers joining the Capital Punishment crew on the night as well, including Jay Sullivan, Emo Parsonson and more to be announced. It’s set to be a bumper night, don’t miss it.
The self-funded group hopes to see a huge crowd at the Roxbury Hotel in what will be a fundraiser to cover their costs in Melbourne, including travel, accommodation, and loads of cheese and bacon balls.
If you won’t be making it to Melbourne for the comedy festival, here is your chance to see an awesome show.
Tickets are $15 at the door.
